Purpose and distribution

The Ella and Georg Ehrnrooth Foundation grants stipendiary support primarily to young scholars with a doctor's degree. The grants are mainly given for postdoctoral scientific research and for literary activity and presuppose at least a partial leave of absence. Grants may also be given for completing a doctoral thesis within the fields promoted by the Foundation, in which case a written recommendation from the instructor is desirable. The grant period may also be 2 to 3 years. The deadline for application is the 28th of February 2017.

A full year scholarship is 24.000 euros for scholars completing their doctoral thesis and 28.000 euros for postdoctoral scholars.

Grants are not given in fields that are covered by The Magnus Ehrnrooth Foundation, i.e. mathematics, astronomy, physics and chemistry (including biochemistry and medical chemistry), nor in medicine or economic science. Grants are not given for acquisition of equipment, printing expenses or mere congress trips.

When applying for and using grant money, certain directives are to be followed. Please, note the following general principles:

  • Leave of absence (at least partial) is required for the research period.
  • The grants are meant primarily for young researchers.
  • Grants are mainly given to scholars that already have a doctor's degree.
  • If the applicant has applied for or received other grants or awards for the same research, this must be mentioned in the application.
  • As a rule, no grants are given for mere congress trips or for acquisition of equipment or material.
  • Grants are given only to applicants who do not receive a salary from a graduate school or the like.
